It’s been very hot and humid in Evansville. I know I’m not the only one who has been thankful for air conditioning.
However, things like air conditioning, easy access to drinking water, and cool showers are something that many of Patchwork’s guests lack throughout the summer heat.
During the week before our Fourth of July break, we saw triple-digit heat indexes each day. We were busy with many folks coming to Patchwork to get out of the heat. Some also brought their pets to give their pets a break from the heat.
A constant stream of folks came to John asking for over-the-counter pain relievers to treat headaches. John’s answer to them all was the same, “I don’t think this pill will do much for you. Drink more water. I think you may be dehydrated.”
One man nearly passed out while sitting in the mediation area of our garden. At first we thought he might be intoxicated, but after assessing the man, John thought it was likely to be heat related. He helped the man indoors to get some cold water and a wet compress for his forehead.
While we’re only open for limited hours, we hope to send folks on their way after having found some reprieve from the heat.
