Summer Sendoff

Last night we celebrated our summer children’s programming with a room full of friends and family, plenty of stories, and a huge potluck supper.

Our summer Arts & Smarts Program has been full of activity. We’ve worked in Patchwork’s garden harvesting kale and more kale and even more kale, picking blackberries, pulling weeds, and planting sweet potatoes.

We’ve created custom stickers to decorate our bike helmets, we’ve sculpted with clay in the studio, we’ve cut paper to make color twister collages inspired by Eric Carle, and we’ve woven pillows full of stars and stripes.

We’ve learned to drive and program robots with our friends from the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library. We’ve also tried cooking tasty new recipes as part of the library’s Books and Cooks program.

We’ve sung songs with Grandpa Gary and visiting musician Jesse. We’ve also learned about being a singer songwriter from Chris, who gave us kazoos so we could play a chorus along with him.

We’ve told stories with Susan including the story of how a solar eclipse helped scientists understand the motion of the planets, the story of The Rainbow Fish, the story of Grandma’s Feather Bed (there was much flapping of bedding!), the origin story of the Olympics, stories about Olympians including Evansville’s own Lilly King (there was much spritzing of water in honor of the swimmer), and the story of The Keeping Quilt.

Most of all, we enjoyed much silliness and laughter with friends—both old and new.

Thank you to everyone who was part of our summer. It is always a wonderful community of people who gather here.

We look forward to seeing everyone again in the fall. Our afterschool program will begin after Labor Day. Keep an eye out for additional information!
