Fall Arts & Smarts Activities

Patchwork’s Arts & Smarts Program has been back in session for a month now, and we’ve been busy!

  • We’re learning about ceramics and getting a crash course from start to finish. We’ve created new pieces to fire in the kiln and we’ve glazed other pieces that were created in previous sessions.
  • We’re painting with watercolors on watercolor paper and learning how these unique art materials work to create masterpieces.
  • We’re studying MC Escher and his tessellations and we’re making our own complex artworks of repeating patterns.
  • We’re revisiting the artwork of the contemporary Brazilian painter Romero Britto who uses bright colors and patterns to express hope and happiness in his art. With Britto as inspiration, we’re creating our own large acrylic paintings on canvases. (If you attend Patchwork’s Soup, Salad, & Style event, you’ll have a chance to bid on one of these pieces in our live auction!)
  • We’re learning about the Latin American celebration of Dia de los Muertos, and we’re creating a group art project to display at a Dia de los Muertos event in Evansville. Our project is a continuation of and addition to a “Memory Motel” that was originally created 20 years ago. We’re creating new rooms in the Memory Motel that are dedicated to a person, place, or thing that we miss or that we want to honor.
  • We learned about electricity and circuits and used this knowledge to turn ourselves into musical instruments with the help of visitors from the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library who brought a STEM lesson to share.
  • We whipped up some tasty treats in the kitchen using local produce, thanks to the EVPL Books & Cooks program. On the menu were a black-eyed pea and fresh vegetable salad and roasted squash and okra dipped in a special sauce.
  • During the first two weeks of September, our Junior Leaders in grades 5-8 and our High School Volunteers gained leadership skills during Leadership Training. They also created abstract self portraits by tracing their hands, adding patterns, and writing about who they are.
