The kids in the Arts & Smarts Program have been celebrating a Winter Carnival over the past couple weeks. Hopefully this, unlike the groundhog seeing its shadow, does not mean we’ll have six more weeks of ice storms and snow!
The group created snowflakes made out of paper and of glittery, beaded chenille sticks to hang on their lighted “Winter Wonder Line,” aka: the wire line that stretches across the children’s program area. They also learned how to cut paper chains and then used the technique to design strings of stars and other designs to decorate our Winter Tree—the same tree that in December was a Christmas tree.
In addition, we celebrated snowmen. We sculpted our own tiny snowmen and added extra creative flair with clothing. We decorated an inflatable snowman. We played a game of “Pin the Face on the Snowman” with hilarious results. And we ate snowman foods like marshmallows, smore’s, and iced (get it?) cookies.
Mixed into that, we made snacks for birds to eat on cold, wintery days and we learned about basket weaving from a local basket weaver.
Next, we’ll add valentines to the wintery mix on our Winter Tree and Winter Wonder Line!
