More Sights and Sounds of Summer

Every summer in Patchwork’s Arts & Smarts Children’s Program is a kaleidoscope of colors, shapes, and sounds moving and shifting. Their pieces come together to create beautiful moments of fun and community. Our current summer activities are no less colorful, melodious, and active.

In the last two weeks, we have:

  • Planted zinnias for the butterflies both in Patchwork’s garden and in pots to take home, thanks to the Southwestern Indiana Master Gardeners.
  • Learned about tomatoes and planted some in Patchwork’s garden, also thanks to the Master Gardeners.
  • Eaten gourmet snacks planned and prepared by Patty with assistance from our high school volunteers and participants.
  • Learned about geodes as Gary cut some open with his rock saw and everyone got to take one home.
  • Sung fun camp songs with Cindy and her guitar.
  • Learned sign language and used what we learned to tell a story with Lee.
  • Told Ezra Jack Keats’ story Pet Show! with Susan.
  • Walked through our neighborhood while learning a lesson from The Walking Classroom, then played in the playground.
  • Created clay mushrooms and frog houses in the ceramics studio with Molly.
  • Were encouraged to read with a visit from folks from the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library.
  • Learned about the ecosystem from the Master Gardeners.
  • Sewed quirky puppets with Jean.
  • Played many energetic rounds of “Little Sally Walker” with Bailey.

Below you can see photos of some of these activities. You can also watch a video to immerse yourself in the garden activity.

There are two more weeks of children’s activities left. They’re coming up the weeks of July 10 and 17. You can find registration forms for participants in grades 1-8 or for high school and adult volunteers on our website, or you can stop by Patchwork’s main office to pick them up in person. Each week runs Monday-Thursday and activities go from 2:30 pm-5:00 pm. If you’re interested in joining us, please check ahead to make sure there are spaces available during the weeks you want to attend.
