In Bloom

During the first week of June, Pat helped the children in Art Garden Week 1 plant seeds at the base of Patchwork’s tower. They watered the seeds–once.

Then the week was over and the seeds were left to fend for themselves in what became, by August, an exceptional drought. I pretty much wrote them off. No one had time to tend them.

Then it was the beginning of September and I glanced over as I came up the front walk at Patchwork. There was a very full, very healthy, very happy planting of zinnias blooming. I hadn’t even noticed them starting to grow.

That day, I had needed some encouragement, and there it was. I know it’s cliched, but it was the little reminder I needed that there is hope. Hope for the seeds we plant in a child’s life through our Arts & Smarts program. Hope for the seeds we plant in the lives of the people our food pantry feeds. Hope for the seeds we plant in the lives of the individuals who use Patchwork as a community resource. Hope for the seeds we plant in each other’s lives as we care for and learn from one another.

Those seeds may not look like much now or for a long time to come, but there is hope that they may someday bloom and make the world just a little bit better.
