Who We Are What We Do Get Involved

History

Patchwork Central was born on March 22, 1977. Patchwork Central was started by three young couples with a vision to live, work and worship together in the area near downtown Evansville, Indiana. The Amersons, Doyles and Kimbroughs left their jobs and homes and bought houses in the same downtown neighborhood of Evansville. They began worshipping together in their living rooms, then invited their neighbors and worshipped in the Patchwork House. They bought the Washington Avenue Temple nearby and people from the neighborhood came to Sunday afternoon worship. They called this building The Meetinghouse.

From the beginning, worship was combined with service. Patchwork’s programs and ministries have included neighborhood gardening, health and dental services for the poor, after-school programs for at-risk children, a Neighborhood Economic Development Center, a bakery, hospitality housing for women, men’s residency program, a food pantry, community Bible studies, and the Center for Community Renewal. Over the past 30 years, many people have come and gone as Community members, staff and volunteers. We invite and welcome all who wish to join us as we walk forward, working, playing, worshipping and serving together.
