He has been living in his car with his dog for a while. Several months ago he started stopping at Patchwork to get a shower, to charge his phone, and to drink some coffee. He’s known among the staff for being angry and complaining about everyone else. He reacts quickly in minor conflicts, he has a chip on his shoulder, and he projects a very tough guy image. As a result, our staff’s conversations with him have been civil but brief.
Then on our first day open in 2018, he walked into Patchwork’s main office and said thank you. He told Shawn, “I’m going to be getting an apartment next week. And it’s all because of you. You told me to talk to Aurora while I was here. I did, and they signed me up for housing. I’d talked to them before, but it didn’t go so well. Last week I got a call out of nowhere, and they were saying they had an apartment for me. And my dog can come, too.”
Sometimes, the services that Patchwork provides for our community are subtle. As in this instance, we provided something small but vital. We didn’t provide the case worker or the housing. But what we did was to create a space where someone who was homeless and a little angry and irritated could find enough peace that he was able to hear a friendly suggestion and he was able to hear what a case worker was trying to tell him.
We work hard to be a place where everyone can feel respected and at peace. We are a place where people feel safe meeting with case workers. We are a place where a group of older men meets up to discuss life over a cup of coffee. We are a place where a homeless woman sits down at the piano and graces us with a 20 minute recital as the coffee steams. We are a place of warmth in the cold.
